Trauma and General Surgeon/Critical Care Intensivist

Nelayda Fonte, DO, FACOS, FICS is a graduate of UMDNJ-SOM (Rowan). Completed a general surgery residency at Kennedy Memorial Hospital, completed a TRAUMA/ Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Cooper Hospital in Camden, NJ. She stayed at this Level 1 trauma center as an attending trauma surgeon and then moved to Florida where Lee Memorial Hospital had received its Level 2 trauma center designation. She found her home in sunny Gulf Coast where she has remained for 28 years. She was Assistant Director of Trauma, Chief of Surgery, and Past President of the Medical Staff. Holding positions in multiple committees including Trauma Multidisciplinary and Morbidity & Mortality Reviews, Credentialing, Physician/Hospital Organization Operating Committee and PHO credentialing, LMHS Surgical Council, LMHS Medical Executive Committee, and facilitating reviews for QI committee. She was actively involved in community outreach/trauma prevention programs sponsored by her trauma department, local law enforcement, media, and academic centers, ranging from preschool to the collegiate level, as well as programs geared to trauma prevention in the elderly. Dr Fonte has served in an advisory role to organizations like "Just Drive/ Stay Alive", Coalition for a Drug Free Southwest Florida, and LifeLink organ procurement organization. Staying close to her Osteopathic Surgical roots, she has been involved with the ACOS through committee membership including Nomination Committee, Awards Committee, and the In-Depth Review Committee. She has lectured at the ACA, co-chaired IDR conference, and the ACA in Phoenix, AZ. In keeping with her commitment to education and surgery she is also a Board liaison to our COM ACOS- MSS and offers mentoring to aspiring surgeons and is on the inaugural clinical staff at Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine. She had a hybrid practice General Surgery/Covid Critical Care nationally during the pandemic and continues to actively practice general surgery/ critical care.
