Dr. Omar Awais is the Clinical Director of Thoracic Surgery and is the Chief of Thoracic Surgery at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center at Mercy Hospital. He is also the Associate Professor of Surgery at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr Awais graduated from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. After which he completed his general surgery training at Brookedale University Hospital and furthered his training in Cardiothoracic Surgery at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Awais also completed a fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in Thoracic Oncology and an advanced fellowship in Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is presently faculty at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and was integral in developing a Thoracic Program at UPMC Mercy Hospital and it's satellite locations. In 2018, he was also invited to be a member of the national Fellowship council. In 2019, he became the Advanced MIS Thoracic Fellowship Director at UPMC. Dr. Awais is the author or co-author in nearly 100 manuscripts, abstracts and chapters. Over the past decade, he has been an invited speaker both regionally and nationally in all aspects of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Awais' research interests include lung cancer, esophageal cancer, benign esophageal disorders and re-operative esophageal surgery.
